Don’t let your message be lost! International academic journal reports an initiative to develop presentation skills to “communicate and connect”

The need for improving and expanding presentation training becomes evident

Researchers from Shimane University and the RIKEN CSRS conducted an in-person presentation training workshop in association with the 65th annual meeting of the Japanese Society of Plant Physiologists. The questionnaire survey among workshop participants elucidated that the current presentation training in higher education is inadequate.

In higher education and academic research environments, there are numerous opportunities to deliver presentations, such as research presentations, talks, lectures, and job interviews. The quality of presentation could have multifaceted impacts on performance, evaluation, career development, and acquisition of research funds. However, higher educational and research institutions in Japan provide limited opportunities for specialized presentation training, and the situation varies depending on the affiliations people belong to. This training workshop was organized to provide an opportunity for anyone, regardless of their affiliation, to hone their presentation skills. The results of the post-workshop questionnaire survey indicate that collaboration among participants with diverse backgrounds can promote human interaction that transcends expertise and generations, and suggest that presentation training can help connect people and hold society together.
